Weather Prediction Center warns of heavy rains for South Florida

Central and South Florida have been put on alert by the Weather Prediction Center that slow moving storms this afternoon could dump heavy rains and create possible flash-flooding situations.

National Weather Service forecasters in Miami said this morning that a disturbed area of weather is moving in from the southeast Gulf of Mexico and could tap into already super moist air in the area.

They expect most showers to concentrate from Naples across to Lake Okeechobee and into Palm Beach County.

“Main concern will be heavy rainfall and localized flooding,” Miami forecasters wrote in a morning discussion. “Also, moderate southwest winds today will mean that the strongest convection may contain wind gusts of up to 50 mph.”
