Hurricane Gaston has been upgraded to a Category 3 storm with 115 mph winds. This makes it the third hurricane of the year and the first major storm.
The National Hurricane Center said Gaston, which is located about 580 miles east of Bermuda, has a minimum central pressure of 962 mb.
Gaston’s 15 nautical-mile wide eye became distinct on visible satellite images today and infrared satellite images show cooling cloud tops, which indicated strengthening.
However, Gaston’s track is taking it into increasing wind shear and weakening is expected to begin in about two days.
Gaston is no threat to land.
