Karl expected to become hurricane Saturday near Bermuda

Tropical Storm Karl, which regained it’s storm status Thursday, is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane Saturday near Bermuda. The Bermuda Weather Service has issued a hurricane watch.

As of the 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Karl had 60 mph sustained winds with a minimum central pressure that had dropped to 992 mb.

If Karl reaches hurricane strength, it will be the 5th hurricane of 2016.

A NOAA Hurricane Hunter plane is investigating the cyclone, which is heading north at 12 mph.

Tropical storm conditions are expected in Bermuda tonight with hurricane conditions arriving overnight. Karl could produce total rainfall of 3 to 5 inches through early Sunday.
