Incredible images from inside powerful Hurricane Matthew

Teams from NOAA and the Air Force Reserve boldly fly into hurricanes to provide vital information about wind speeds and the atmosphere around tropical cyclones.

During long-lived Matthew, meteorologists and flight crews on the planes took stunning photos from within the storm.

The images show the complexity of tropical cyclones that can be both beautiful and deadly. On Sept. 30, Matthew briefly became a Category 5 hurricane with 160 mph winds – the strongest hurricane in the Atlantic since Felix in 2007.
